Horse Tales

Horse Tales Literacy Project, formerly known as the Black Stallion Literacy Project is a National literacy program designed to encourage a love of reading in children who are at high risk of failure. Higher levels of reading directly correlates to more success in school and in later life. Five Points Arabian Horse Association and Turnquist Partners Realtors brought the program to the Austin Independent School District and serve over 800 first graders each year.

The schools get a visit from two horses, Big Red and Little black, the characters in Walter Farley's Little Black, A Pony. They receive a hardcopy of their own. Classroom curriculum including spelling and arithmetic is included. Later they have a field trip to the Expo Center where they learn more about horses and read from their book to Big Red and Little Black. They also receive a copy of Little Black Goes to the Circus. This program has won many national awards and has the full support and enthusiasm of the Austin Independent School District administration as well as the teachers of the first graders. Optimum Training Center has proudly been a volunteer for this effort since 2009.
